paper craft research

Paper craft research
Lucas Bierens

This project revolves around paper as a sculptural material that can be utilized to form 3D designs. Through the use of rhino, we can create 3D objects that we made and smashed onto a 2D plane and reconstructed once again.

I chose the artist, Matt Shlian. He uses different coloured papers to create vividly active panels of 3D sculpture panels. Pattern and repetition forms sheets of texturized panels that appear to be moving.

As you can see, Shlian uses intricately paper shapes to create colourful and alive pieces of sculpture. How he can create such pristine folds and bends with thick and sturdy paper is beyond me. His dedication to technique and visual cleanliness is extreme and inspirational. The way Shlian creates these sculptures, makes it look as though it was made of anything but paper. The use of colour in the pieces also represents a mastery of colour theory and lighting.

From the other artists listed within the links, it was very easy to choose his work. Hopefully I can achieve something that can be as clean and striking as his work.
